How soon should I be sure about a major?

I mean - ASAP is obviously a good answer. The rest of this year, when I’m not working on scholarships, will be for me to work out what careers I might want or what major I most want to explore. I have a general idea of a focus.

However…how soon do you need (or would it be best) to know -

1) your specific major
2) that you want to do a pre-professional program

just keep weeding things out, you’ll end up choosing, partly what you like, partly what you’ve been taking, partly which majors people consider smart ones, partly which employable, partly which you find the easiest/hardest to do (whichever you look for). it’ll happen just keep eliminating, seas you’d better know by when you get back third semester, CC you’d better know end of third semester, after that it becomes exponentially tougher to switch around because you begin finishing core classes.

If you’re CC, you should have 2-3 things in mind going into Columbia. During your freshman year, you should have enough time – even with the Core – to take classes in those 2-3 areas. You don’t want to wait 'til 4th semester to take your first class in your declared major.
