How soon will we hear about admission decision?

Sorry about all the waitlists-a particular form of purgatory I don’t envy. Please keep us posted.

BTMell - Thanks for the kind words, and sorry about Tulane but really glad about Bates (at least I am assuming it is Bates, which is a very fine school). As far as the “■■■■■”, if it wasn’t one, they were at least a bit misinformed since there were several CC acceptances after that posting, so I would think there were others that are not CC users. But it is true that at that point in the process, most students are not going to get an outright acceptance. Anyway, all moot now.

Best of luck to your son. What a contrast though. Maine vs. Louisiana. Snow boots vs. waders. LOL. He will do great.

Waitlisted but definitely not going. I got into USC so I’ll definitely go there

Hi Fallen - yes, Bates. It felt like a match from the beginning and the fact that he’ll get to play golf is such a bonus. He loves golf and I think the team at Bates is pretty low key. The coach seems wonderful and he’s met some of the other players, all of whom seem like great guys. We have a lasting love of Tulane - maybe he’ll end up there for medical school? Who knows.

When we moved from New Orleans to Hanover NH in 1994 in the WINTER we joked that we moved from the deep south to the deep north. Our son is the only yankee (not to be confused with the Yankees, heaven forbid!) in our house. Bates also gives him the opportunity for outdoorsy ventures which he loves too. So in the end, it’s worked out. I’ll need to be practicing my “downeast” accent a-yup! I guess we’ve traded crawfish for lobstah.

Have they published anywhere yet the number of apps received this year, what percent change (up or down) it is from last year and what that acceptance rate is this year?

Well, I guess the rest were waitlisted! I’m not too bummed. I’m probably going to St. Olaf  Also, another person from my small, rural high school applied and got in EA. That could be a factor in this decision, as well. Either way, best of luck to you all!

jym - we will have to wait for final confirmation, but I have heard that there were about 32,000 applications (definitely down from the 37,767 last year. Maybe Tulane cut back on direct mailers?) Also heard there were going to be about 7,500 offers of acceptance (23.5%) and a hoped for enrollment of 1500 (20% yield). We will have to see how correct that 32,000 number is, especially. I am least confident in that one.

trojan13 - Congrats on USC!! Great school, obviously. Try not to get sunburned!

BTMell - I literally laughed out loud reading your last post. It took me awhile to get used to the accent here in RI as well, which is about half Boston style and half some watered down version. I have one burning question though. How do they play golf in the snow?? Kidding of course, but I bet when the weather is golf-like the courses are beautiful. They must be especially spectacular in early fall. And when he cannot golf, the cross-country skiing should be outstanding. And you are right, cheap lobstah instead of cheap oysters. So nice!

jaccrazzi - Good to hear you have such a nice alternative. I don’t know a lot about St. Olaf other than it has a fine reputation. Wishing you nothing but good luck and a great time there.

Thanks, FC, as usual. Maybe with the word getting out that its really a good idea to complete the “Why Tulane” essay and also the requirement to apply EA in order to apply for the DHS (is it also true for the Paul Tulane??) perhaps these affected the apps numbers this year… Just wondering…

ha ha - orange golf balls? Dartmouth (where i work) has a campus golf course where the Hanover golf team kids play. I’m pretty sure he and a couple of teammates have played in the snow. They do cross country ski on the golf course in the winter as well. We’ve enjoyed it up here very much - we loved living in New Orleans as well.

My accent is still somewhat southern which people love up here. My boss has caught on to what “bless your heart” means which we joke about. I do miss New Orleans and Tulane - we spent 18 wonderful years there. But also love Rhode Island - I actually have enjoyed New England in general.

Jaccrazzi - congratulations on St. Olaf - what a wonderful school! A good friend of my son’s was accepted there as well and his counselor sings its praises. Nice job.

How can you rescind your application? My daughter got waitlisted but decided she’s not going to bother with it, so it’s down to USC, UIUC, and ND. To those who choose to stay on the waitlist, I wish you the best of luck! :)

I think if she goes to the Gibson page where they tell her she is waitlisted, there is a place to tell them if she wants to stay on the wait list or not. Either there, or they will send something asking that. Otherwise, I am sure an e-mail to her admissions rep will do the trick as well.

Best of luck to her!

We just sent them an e-mail. Thanks so much! :)

I honestly don’t understand college admissions…

I got into Seton Hall University, a safety school, with a merit scholarship.

I got wait-listed at Drexel University, a safety school.

I got rejected from:

Case Western Reserve University
University of Miami
Fordham University
Northeastern University
University of Maryland, College Park (I’m a MD resident)
American University

Tulane University, the most competitive & prestigious university I applied to:

Take a wild guess on their admissions decision?

Rejected, right?

No, I got wait-listed.

Is logic, like, not a real thing?

Don’t get me wrong, I love Tulane & it’s my first pick and all… but how I do get rejected from A TON of schools that are lower than Tulane, but not rejected from Tulane?

Does anyone understand this?

WildcatKY:

I feel your pain. I had the oddest luck with colleges. But really, it’s a total crapshoot. There’s not much we can really tell you. Every college is looking for something different. Good luck to you though.

Sure. You are implicitly operating from the premise that all admissions departments are using the same criteria to make their decisions, and so if you get denied from a school that is less selective than another you are sure to get denied (I hate saying rejected when it comes to college admissions) at the more selective one. That is simply an incorrect premise. Tulane is the perfect example, in fact. They use demonstrated interest to a much larger degree than many other schools. So a student that might very well get into an Ivy League school or a similar institution might very well get denied or wait listed at Tulane because it was clear they were just using Tulane as a “safety”. Similarly, a student that got denied at a less selective school might get an offer from Tulane because Tulane puts high value on students that really embrace service. I am not saying that is true to the point that an academically unqualified student would get in, even if they saved the world (well maybe of they actually saved it…).

But there are many variables that go into an admission process, and those variables can be different and/or differently weighted at different schools. Tulane saw something in you that said to them that while they probably don’t have room in this year’s class (hence the wait list), they think you could be successful at Tulane should a space open up and they decide to offer it to you.

So yes, logic is a real thing, but the logic of School A can be very different than the logic of School’s B, C and D and for very valid reasons that pertain to that school.

But never actually thought it was true…

I did demonstrate a lot of interest, have an application plump with community service, and have glowing letters of recommendation, etc.

But I also think the fact that Tulane is more need-blind than the other schools probably had an influence…

Well, I’m not complaining. I hope I get called off of the wait-list…
