I’ve been told that you want your essays specific and personal, but to what extents?

For example (these aren’t necessarily my essay topics, I’m just using multiple topics to give a better understanding of what I’m asking) if I were writing about music and moving to the concert master position, should I describe specifically what seat I was at before moving to first chair? Or if I’m writing about running, do I want specific times? Or if I talk about training, should I describe how much training (ie, for running, total mileage) or is just saying I trained enough?

Not specific as in time and numbers. They mean something specific that happened to you. Or something you can describe in a way that is unique to you. Like if you write about training, you have to right how you felt, what you see, you know, the senses.

It might be relevant to include those kinds of details, but it also might not be. It depends on the context.
But “be specific” just means “don’t be generic.” The essay shouldn’t seem like it could have been written about someone else.

I am highlighting a specific event in my essay from an internship, and I am wondering if my essay is currently too specific. If someone wouldn’t mind taking a look, could he PM me?
