How strong am of a candidate am I?

<p>I’m applying to a broad range of schools, from Stanford to OSU to the College of Wooster. Cappex, College *******, and other such sites say I’m a good candidate for all these schools, but I’m skeptical of that. What level candidate am I? Do I have a shot at Stanford, Williams, or other top level schools? Are there any glaring holes that I can fix? </p>

<p>GPA
3.66 UW 4.35 W </p>

<p>Class rank: 11/115 (public school, one of the better ones in my city).</p>

<p>I’m tied for most AP classes in my grade, which is only 5. </p>

<p>I go to an arts school, and have received some awards within school, which makes me a little more intriguing I guess.</p>

<p>Overall my grades are my weak point, I have ADHD and find it very hard to engage in classes that don’t spark my interest.</p>

<p>SAT
800 CR 710 M 590 W (unreadable handwriting accounts for some of that)</p>

<p>ACT
34 perfect science, for whatever that’s worth.</p>

<p>SAT II
750 Math 1(broken calculator, will retake) 720 Chem </p>

<p>Extracurriculars
I worked at a company in Silicon Valley briefly, had an internship doing lab work, and participate in theatre an average of 240 hours a year. I’ve made some fairly useless math proofs too.</p>

<p>Recommendations
My chemistry teacher wrote me a recommendation in which he said that I was one of the brightest kids he ever had, and that I struggled and overcame my initial disorganization and grew into a better student over years. </p>

<p>I have no idea what my other teacher wrote, but it probably painted a similar picture.</p>

<p>Common app essay
It’s humble but showcases my talents, is about as information dense as possible, and reads more like a short story than an essay. I think it is the best essay I could write, and it is the part of the application I am most satisfied with.</p>

<p>Your test scores (most especially your ACT) make you a strong candidate. Your GPA is likely to hold you back, but since your rank is so high, it probably means your school is highly competitive and difficult, which is good! </p>

<p>Here’s a bit of advice, though:
When you retake your Math I, also take Math II - the top colleges are expecting to see Math II when someone submits a subject test in math.</p>

<p>You can just skip Math I if you are going to take Math II - colleges do not put a lot of weight on your Math I score (unless it comes out pretty low - it can only really hurt you. But your score is decent already) if you have a Math II score, so it will just be a waste of time and money. Good luck!</p>

<p>Yeah take Math II instead. I took Math I a few years ago. I think I got one, or maybe two, questions wrong and it dropped me down to a 740. The Math II test is more relevant and has a nicer curve.</p>

<p>Your ACT score looks much better than your SAT score; the 590 writing means that you probably shouldn’t send the latter.</p>

<p>Grades are a bit weak, essays sound interesting.</p>

<p>You sound like a typical applicant to top schools. Don’t keep your hopes up for Stanford and the likes, but you’re probably in at safety and match schools.</p>
