Feet have also grown wider. I used to wear a medium width, but now I need a narrow or the shoes fall off of my feet. Narrow shoes are extremely hard to find and never at places like DSW. I have no choice but to pay full price and be glad they fit.
“Does anyone else buy crazy shoes at DSW because they have the coveted 80% off yellow sticker on them?”
LOL. That’s what niece fell for with the abovementioned shiny heels.
Oh yes, D has more than one pair that she owns only because of those DSW markdowns.
@FallGirl it must vary by location. D’s feet are narrow and she has the best luck with DSW, though we don’t shop at the expensive stores-perhaps those would also carry her width. Have you tried Easy Spirit? They make about 4 widths and I’ve always been a medium there, still am, so maybe they have not changed their sizing?
Not my words, exact quote from my wife…I would never call heels outlandish, they can look rather nice as an observer lol.
Well, I fell in love with these at Nordstrom last weekend, but didn’t like the price.
So, I just bought these at DSW today. I think they are not quite as intricate, but basically the same look for less. I love that!

I’m wearing them with this sweater from Chicos…yes, Chicos. First thing I’ve bought in awhile
If I am looking for properly fitting dress shoes, I’m a 9.5 AA with a AAAA heel. Naturalizer used to be the only place I could get them. They are still hard to find, but I am less picky these days. I wear a 10 in sneakers and boots, and I can lace tightly enough that a medium width is OK.
I tried to like Lands End flats – liked the styles, but they were too flat for me with my high arches.
@MotherOfDragons …well, you have a point. DH has one picture of me framed when we were 19, a close up he took while dating. I sort of sigh when I look at it, sometimes pick it up and compare in the mirror. Then I wish it weren’t out.
I’d like to thank you all for this thread, because it reminded me to pick up a pair of heels I needed before I move for school. :))
“I’m wearing them with this sweater from Chicos…yes, Chicos. First thing I’ve bought in awhile.”
Wait. It is August 12. Someone is wearing a sweater?
I’m with @CountingDown , it’s all about a shoe coming up to meet my high arch. Plus you have to find a shoe where their “last” matches your foot. To take the opposite of heels, I know people who swear Birkenstocks are comfortable - to me they are torture. On the other hand, if my feet start giving me trouble, a day in my Keen sandals solves most of it because they match my feet.
I’m still looking for dressy strappy sandals that don’t have a flat footbed. Anybody have suggestions?
@BunsenBurner …not wearing it yet!
@dragonmom I don’t have a very high arch, but I can only wear supportive shoes. Many women I know swear by Arche shoes, but they have a very unique style and are not cheap. I always find them very comfortable. http://www.arche-shoes.com/store/pc/home.asp
Ooh, some cute styles there. Thank you very much!
Sometimes I find Arche shoes at Sierra Trading Post online store at a bargain price when I use coupons. Good luck!
Well that would make a huge difference, I was kind of gulping at prices upwards of $300
5’-6" 37 to 38 or 7W foot. I have a couple of reasonably comfortable wedges with about 3/4" to 1" height. All my other shoes with heels are so uncomfortable I never actually wear them. I think heels look better, but I hate them.
I’m mostly a flat shoes person. I’m 5’10 but don’t really care about whether shoes put me up over the 6 foot Mark, I just like to be comfortable. I have big feet (used to be a 10 but seem to have spread into an 11 after pregnancies) and for most of my life found it very hard to find anything approaching cute shoes. Now there are several brands that make their shoes in my size and I buy more shoes than I should, much to my husband’s chagrin - he has 2 pairs of shoes and doesn’t understand the need for more than that.
After years of having to buy Men’s flip flops I was much more excited last year than I should be about finding really nice women’s flip flops in my size - yay Amazon!
I do occasionally succumb to temptation when I see a shoe I like with a smallish heel. I have 3 pairs of slide sandals with a wedge heel. And I bought a pair of ankle boots with an actual heel (wedges are easier for me to walk in). I couldn’t resist, they were purple suede! Haven’t worn them yet. I need to practice at home first.
I’m 5’6"…I wear flats 99% of the time…If I have to, I wear up to a 2" heel. I’m so glad to read here that I am not the only woman who can’t/won’t wear heels!
To be honest it actually surprises me the number that don’t wear heels.
Well, 99% of my life I’m in bare feet or tennis sneakers-it’s just that I adore heels. I don’t live in them, though. Ever since reading those books about the barefoot runners about a decade ago, I’m either not wearing shoes at all, or I’m wearing Vibrams as much as I can.
Ironically, my middle toe is longer than my big toe, which makes the Vibrams harder for me to break in-irony because the guy who invented Vibrams also has a longer middle toe (also called a greek toe because all the statues have them), but he didn’t design them around his own feet!
I tried wearing them for tennis once, but they didn’t have the lateral support I needed and it was a looooong game trying not to snap an ankle.
