How To Achieve My SAT Dream?

Unlike most people on this sight, im not a genius shooting for 2250+ scores. Im an average kid that most see as pretty bright. My dream for the SAT is to get above a 2020, thats it. Im pretty good at the CR section and Writing section but my math score is really holding me down. As a kid i was a decent math student but i never seemed to excel at math. i was rather good in writing and reading even though i was never placed in advanced classes for thsoe subjects. I read everyday in elementary and middle school. It didn’t help that I was placed in on level math until high school regardless of my above average scores on my math state tests every year. I was not in advanced classses until i was a freshmen. when i was placed in remedial math, the teacher, who also taught my siblings, demanded i get my schedule changed so i switched to all honors(im at the top of my classs now, who knew I actually had some brains). over the years, I have also had teachers that have failed to teach me(literally) and some that did not even touch on geometry. My practice tests for math are at 500 now. I dont even know where to start since it seems i dont even know many of the concepts used to solve these problems. Im not one to give up though so I have placed a goal of 640 for my math SAT in October. Where do I start?!?!? Help me accomplish my dream SAT score :D

Goal: Math- 620
Reading- 680
Writing- 750

Sorry for the story :P

We’re so much alike  I started with a 460 in math, and have improved to 670. Trust me, you can do this!

Here’s my advice, if you don’t have The Official SAT study Guide, go get it. It’s imperative, they have them at the libraries now btw. Before you start working on it however, get to know your concepts. Look on google for Barron’s SAT 2400 it’s a book with basic concepts for math and the other sections. Also check out Grubers complete sat 2009 (also on google as PDF) once you know all those concepts go to your library and search for a DVD called SAT Math by Video Aided Instruction. They will help you solve so many problems, not only algebraically but also with little tricks. Try to go through the 6 CDs in a month. During the middle of that take a practice test (only consisting of math) and go over your wrong answers METICULOUSLY. Then buy PWN The SAT and follow it closely, by doing the examples and the recommended problems on the BB. That book has been the most helpful so far. If you don’t understand questions on the BB check out [Khan Academy](http://khanacademy.org) and http://satquantum.com
If you do all this your score should be at about 600-640, then to bump that up I suggest Dr.Chungs SAT math book, it’s very difficult so don’t be discouraged, but the challenging questions will heavily prepare you for the actual SAT. It consists of level 3-5 questions.

Since you’re not going for gold, just practice practice practice. The more problems you do, the more you’ll realize that there are a pattern to the questions they ask, and you will start to know what type of question it is before even solving it!

@aares1, I have the SAT bb and i can get SAT 2400 from the library and ill check out Grubers. Idk about the CD but im going to search my library system to see if i can find it.
@yodelo, yeah ive noticed the patterns but i want to grasp math more than anything, especially if i end up getting problems a bit different from what ive been studying.

bump…

Try only doing CollegeBoard math problems, I find those are the most identical to the actual test well…because they make them!

@yodelo, that’s good advice. I’ve been doing math practice with Princeton review but Ill do some college board practice problems tomorrow :D
