On the FRI app, there is a prompt that reads “Give one example of a time when you created, invented, explored or researched something of interest to you. How did you develop or begin the project, and what did you learn from the experience?”

Do you think that the committee is looking strictly for science based answers, or that they are looking for a genuine, creative interest in anything?

Anything goes. After reading hundreds of science-based replies, I’m sure that they would not mind a more unique take on the prompt. What’s critical for this question is the thought process you followed. They want to see that you can think critically and problem solve. It’s entirely possible to think scientifically without strictly “doing science”.

Either way, the program isn’t too selective and you should be fine as long as you take the application seriously.
