how to ask?

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask this… I know that colleges don’t officially have quotas, but I know for some schools (like Yale) there are unofficial quotas for my school. I am applying to basically two types of schools: elite mid sized research universities and small LACs. I’m worried that the LACs might have unofficial quotas of 1-2 students. I have a clear first choice among the smaller schools, and am thinking of applying to another small school (both schools are matches, and my GC thinks I have a very good chance at my first choice LAC) and am deciding between two of them. I know one girl in my class really likes the smaller schools and it’s possible that if we both applied I could get in, she might be waitlisted/rejected, and then I might decide to go somewhere else. Is there some way I could ask her what her top choice is of the smaller schools without coming off as being mean/stuck-up? Say it’s between colleges x and y, and I go for x for no real reason (maybe college y requires a bit of extra work or something), and college x is her 1st choice school by far and I apply and I get in and she doesn’t and then I decide to go somewhere else, I’d feel REALLY bad!!! Is there some nice way to ask? Sorry this is such a long post!

I know what you mean about the unofficial quota thing: My EA school always takes the same (very small) number of kids from my High School.

If you want to be rather indirect about it, you might ask her opinions on the schools because you can’t decide between the two. Say you like both but can’t really decide, blah blah blah, maybe ask if she likes one more than the other in an offhand way. I don’t know how well you know her, though, so this may or may not work.

Oddly enough, that’s one of the few schools where we don’t seem to have a quota. We’ve had up to 6-7 girls get in there out of a class of about 80-90.
