Hi y’all!
I just recently got my news about a scholarship on which I was banking everything on and didn’t come close to what I thought I was going to be granted. I initially felt extremely upset and down, but I realized that I still have (at the very least) a couple of months until I have to fully commit to college prep.
How can I apply for any last-minute scholarships and where will I have to go for college loans? Also, I would appreciate any tips on how to manage the loans as I only intend on attending a public school for 2 years and an additional masters program (more money more problems…).
Thanks in advance!
How is your financial aid standing for FAFSA? I am sure this is a premature question since you most likely have/just have filled out FAFSA and your school most likely have not processed it? Is there a chance you will get grant money from this?
Also, did your prep college give you any scholarships/grants?
Are you still in High School? If so, there may be a nifty career center that provides scholarships that no one fills out.
There are endless opportunities.
If you have to, get a loan. Best way to do it is to fill out FAFSA and see what they report back to you in terms of how much grants/loans you are eligible for at the best rate. Next I would check in with my financial aid officer at that college to talk about loans. They can direct you to the best source.
To manage loans? Well… gotta learn how to budget. In the grand scheme of thing, being in debt isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. As long as you are smart about where you’re taking loans out and repaying the loans (perhaps even paying more than the monthly quota which will SURELY help you), you will be fine… Don’t sweat too much about it.
Wait–is this for the Texas Advanced scholarship? Are those results out yet?
@carachel2 I am referring to the Academic Excellence Scholarship at UTD. I am not sure about the Texas Advanced scholarship, sorry…
@Skyeward
Why do you think this poster “just” filled out the fafsa? It’s been available for filing since October ?
To the OP. What other scholarships are possible for you through your school? What about need based aid?
Have you applied to other schools where merit awards are more likely…or that are affordable without them?
What is your EFC?

What do you mean by the above? Do you plan on graduating from UT after two years there?
As for loans, you can borrow $5,500 for freshman year thru a federal Direct Loan. to borrow more would mean that your parents would have to cosign, and most parents won’t do that.
I am not sure what my EFC is, but I intend to calculate it ASAP.
What I meant by your quoted line is that I have sufficient AP and dual credit credits to cover (at the very least) two years of undergrad as per my designated course line at UTD. I plan on graduating from UTD two years later.
@thumper1 Well… I did put a “/” there to indicate whether if OP did just fill it out or have filled it out following further context… So I didn’t necessarily assume whether OP just filled it out… Also most students fill it out during Winter Break…
