How to avoid the "rings of death" xbox 360 live

<p>My son is on his third xbox360 elite (replaced each time under the replacement plan). What causes the dreaded rings of death and any suggestions on how to possible avoid that particular kiss of death to his xbox?? It is such a hassle to return the unit, wait for a gift card, and then go pick up another…</p>

<p>What the three rings mean, I believe, is that there is a hardware failure, which is sometimes avoidable and sometimes not. One thing you can do is to make sure it is well ventilated on all sides, even the bottom. I built a stand for mine that keeps if off the ground and the air circulating. Also, make sure the big gray part of the power chord gets air.</p>

<p>One thing that seems to have worked for my son’s xbox is a fan. He lost one xbox360 (under warranty) to the ring of death. It had been overheating as well. We bought this for his system, and he’s not had any issues for over a year…(knock on wood). </p>

<p>If you Google it, you will get lots of suggestions, some as reliable as the ones on CC! ( BTW, We had one scare when we looked it up wrong one, but we got a “good” one, unreplacea since we purchased the summer after it lanuched.)</p>

<p>Good heavens, the valuable things you learn on cc. overheating? The xbox shouldn’t be sitting on the low (berber) basement carpet? The console does feel kind of hot.</p>

<p>(DS recently bought what would have been worth (2 or 3 years ago) about $1800 worth of xbox and accessories and games for his $150 birthday money. Happy camper now has an xbox with halo and halo 2 and about 25 other xbox games… Thank you ebay.)</p>
