How to be a good English Tutor?

Today I was hired by my college to be an English tutor. I’ve completed English 101, 102, and Brit Lit 250 so far, even though the minimum requirement to be a tutor is only 101. I completed those three classes with one A and two B’s.

Anyway, I have to start tutoring in about 3 weeks, and I was hoping for some advice. What makes a good tutor? I’ve never tutored before. I’m going to be working in my college’s ‘tutoring learning computing lab’ in the English section. Kids just walk in, sit down, and ask you questions.

Thanks!

Answer their questions, critique and correct any mistakes in their writing. Make sure they understand the mechanics of the English language and give them tips on how to improve.

My S was an English tutor. One piece of advice that I gave him when he was writing papers, he admitted he used a lot with the kids he tutored. Read your work aloud. Some people have trouble writing complete sentences or grammatically correct sentences. However, many students will catch their own mistakes if they read their work aloud.

thanks guys, pretty good advice :D
