Haven’t asked for advice on this board for a while. But today I was having lunch with a friend and his girlfriend and I was being loud and making jokes (as usual), and his girlfriend kept looking kind of ticked off. Didn’t bother me much, but this isn’t the first time that this has happened, so I figured it can probably be something I can improve on. How can a dude be himself without looking like a rear end in a top hat?

I like when guys can pull off sexual innuendo jokes without seeming like a chauvanistic (sp) a**hole

How does one appear like an ahole? Is it a totally subjective thing?

This isn’t the first time it’s happened in the presence of your friend’s girlfriend? I doubt you’re coming off as arrogant. Your friend’s GF probably doesn’t have a sense of humor and is jealous she cannot make jokes that are funny. She’s insecure.

Don’t be an ahole by insulting a person or group of people (unless maybe it’s someone really rude or something). Don’t say anything that degrades women or religion or political views.

It isn’t the first time it happened in the presence of a girl. Guys tend to like my sense of humor, but sometimes chicks are turned off.

Well, you can always mix in some more self-deprecating jokes… then again, I’ve probably got more to work with than other people in that regard.

what kinda jokes r u making?

Show them Lakrosse’s threads and they’ll laugh their asses off

^^ Or the Clam Fart thread…

“How can a dude be himself without looking like a rear end in a top hat?”

Uh, maybe you could look into not BEING an a** with a top hat.

My IQ ist beeger than me deedee.

Just be yourself and forget the rest. There’s always going to be haters.

If it’s a girl, then easy. This is going to sound “sexist”, but based on personal experience and second hand knowledge, it is mostly true:

Girls love it when you play into their insecurities (and believe me they all have them). You can pick these up really fast with just a few conversations, so pay attention. If you feel she might feel insecure about her weight, make a joke about someone else taking a little too much food, eating alot, or exhibiting some other “fat” behavior. Don’t be too mean spirited, just an anecdote or observation. It will subconsciously make her feel better about herself and she’s more likely to find it funny. You can do the same thing by playing off insecurities about intelligence, height, and if you’re carful not to sound too much like an a*shole, then attractiveness. Remember the key is not being direct and instead focusing on light-hearted observations that don’t come across as being mean, but that definitely get the point across.

This is how girls make each other laugh, so it’s no surprise that you can use that to your advantage.

^well i’m a girl,
and my insecurities are all about being a good person,
but if people pointed out how bad other people were,
i think it would just make me depressed

lol, fizix.

no offense to betterthanyouare, but i can’t think of a single girl that would work with…
if a girl is insecure about her weight, she’s not going to feel better about an observation that another girl is heavy. hell, if that girl is someone the first girl has never thought of as fat, she’ll feel even worse about herself, lmao.

so yeah, what are your jokes about?

now I’m curious as to what your jokes you’re making

As a girl, I think Betterthanyou’s joke would lean on the a*shole side.

That’s why you have to be veeeerrrry carful with this approach. As I said, you can’t just try it on some girl you don’t know, and have to be carful treading the line between a*shole and, well, a little bit arrogant yes (which isn’t always a bad thing). Not all guys can pull it off and it doesn’t work on all girls. But i’m just basing it off personal experience and psychology.

You’d be surprised how often some girls just start tearing into other girls when you make these “observations”

make harry potter jokes.
