Honestly, my essays and the whole application overall was very good, however, I submitted my way out of reach score of 1620. That is a total crap and I try to beg them to consider my Jan 23rd scores. Literally I am sure that I will do better, I can assure myself at it. But how to convince admissions office to still consider those scores? Believe me, they might swing my chances to a better direction. What should I do? The problem is that I have applied as EDII, so those freaking scores will be available on 11th of Feb, where the notifications will be sent on 15th of Feb.
I literally do not need words of wisdom such as “do not worry, maybe the rest of the app will save you, NYU is not the last stop on your path to success, you should give up at this point”. There is always a solution in every situation; please help me with it! Should I literally beg them, send a letter, ask to wait with consideration of my app? is there anything that I can do?
If you are that convinced that your Jan 23 scores will be better, call admissions, explain that you want to move into the RD pool, and tell them why. See what they recommend.
do you think that there is no chance of keeping that position of being in ED both with having a chance of still having those very late scores be considered? @mamaedefamilia
I have no idea. That’s why you should call and ask. Explain your reasoning to the admissions officer and see what he or she says. Personally, I don’t think that EDII would offset low SAT scores to that great an extent, but then again, I’m not an admissions officer, either.
The only way to know is to ask them
@shawnspencer @mamaedefamilia the problem is that they have replied me that probably they will not be likely to consider those late scores, because they are just too late. thus I do not know what should I do. NYU for me is way more than just a dream school and I cannot screw it up. I would love to beg them somehow but i do now know how to do it very precisely and effectively
What makes you think you will do 500 points better on the 1/23 SAT? that is your dream, not NYU.
What does the rest of your app look like? Any special hooks?
I suppose that you could pay to have your Jan 23 SAT scores rushed and then if you didn’t improve by much, stay the course. If you improve substantially, call admissions and ask to be switched to RD if they will consider them in that case. An increase of, say, 200 points, would offset EDII status, I would think.
How have you been scoring on practice tests?
@mamaedefamilia honestly, I am a bad test taker but at the day of the test, I almost passed out because I got so stressed. also I take some medicines so everything overall was just bad. On the Jan 23rd SAT, I really do know how to make everything be ok and I will take care of my attitude. so unfortunately, I had to sent to NYU a score of 1620 what totally destroys my application. when it comes to practice tests, I do for 1900-2000. when I am stressed, there is no chance for me to do well on math, but especially on reading. the day when I took this SAT (1620) was bad because many circumstances, so it was not only an issue caused by stress.
I have ECs such as -
internships in lawyer’s office, notary office, accountancy office, few banks,
i got accepted to make a speech on TED lately (I notified them)
gvn youth ambassador program (participant)
european youth parliament (head organiser)
young european federalists (participant)
model un
volunteer at milano fashion week last year
graduated from music school (piano/violin)
accepted for an internship at the department of the ministry of the education in my country
got an intern in starbucks
giving tutoring classes (english language/playing violin and piano)
sports: swimming, tennis, running
languages: english, polish, french, russian
this is kind of “in short”.
most of those ECs are happening now and are done on my gap year, because during school my own high school did not provide much of things to do, so when I came back to my country, I pursued many internships and so on.
they are not very awesome or impressing I think…
I applied to Gallatin, because I would love to connect politics/economics with music and probably journalism as well. I literally have no idea what should I do.
According to NYU:
"With few exceptions, your chances of admission Early Decision aren’t radically different than those who apply Regular Decision. We reserve the sweeping majority of spaces in our first-year class for students who apply Regular Decision and last year, Early Decision applicants had just a 1% chance higher admit rate than those who applied Regular Decision. That said, our Early Decision applicant pool is substantially smaller than our Regular Decision applicant pool, so if you want to compete in a smaller pool of candidates, Early Decision may be an attractive option for you. "
If you really feel like your SAT scores are significantly better, you could switch to regular decision and have them take into account your scores. They do note however for certain selective programs it may help you stand out if you apply ED. I don’t know how Gallatin falls within that spectrum, but it is unlikely for them to be able to consider the scores in time four days before the deadline. They have likely made their decision by them and are preparing to send out the student decisions to all the students. It seems to me the best two options that you have is to stick with your ED II scores with your current application or switch to RD and submit the new scores along with them
do you think personally (just give me your precious opinion) that my current scores are not very favorable for my application, right? I am literally just asking. If you were me, what would you do? Thank you also for that response, it really gave me an overall view on my situation. Thank you so much! @shawnspencer
If it makes you feel any better, I completely missed the deadline to apply. I mean my application is complete, but I did not submit due to certain medical reasons. I am hoping to contact them tomorrow if the admissions office is open. Keep us posted. Wish you the best of luck!!
@classlena 1620 isn’t very strong no matter what school you applied to in NYU, but I’m going to say what you don’t want to me say, that NYU’s college admissions process is truly as holistic as it gets, seeing that I got accepted with lower objective stats compared to some people who got rejected, and that they only look for the positives in a student’s application, and compare those positives. That being said, there’s probably a good chance that you could persuade the admissions office to redirect you to the RD pool and accept the Jan 23 SAT, but it would be nearly impossible, if not entirely, to make them accept your extremely late SAT score while staying in EDII. Regardless, since EDII is generally a bit easier to get accepted in (even if the NYU website claims otherwise), you shouldn’t ask to be placed into the RD pool unless you can guarantee a competitive score, which would require a 350+ point increase, ideally 450 points, I think keeping your poor score may be better for you. That’s just my 2c though, and you should really discuss this with your parents and counselor before coming to an absolute decision, though I’d hope you email/call them by tomorrow if you want to switch applicant pools. Good luck!
