Reading through UC GPA calculation guidelines, if a student has taken any AP courses online (or other summer programs at college level) but not listed in your school’s A through G, we cannot account for those. Is that correct? For eg, my kid’s school does not offer AP macroeconomics, but my kid did it online through an accredited institute, would we be able to list it?
Similar question for common app, how do we list other courses taken outside our own high school? Those are going to boost the gpa and hence would really like to include them
If the on-line provider is UC approved for the AP classes and are a-g classes regardless of your HS’s a-g course list , then the grades from these classes taken the summer after 9th to the summer prior to 12th are included in the UC GPA calculations even if they are not listed on the HS transcript.
A separate transcript will need to be sent once admitted and enrolled at any UC.
For the Common App, the GPA listed on the application comes right from the HS transcript. If the HS doesn’t include outside classes in GPA calculation, the applicant doesn’t recalculate. Whether an individual college recalculates will vary, but that’s not the applicant’s concern. It is what it is.
In terms of listing past coursework and grades received ,that’s covered by the second transcript unless applying to the few colleges that require the Courses and Grades section to be completed.
Yes, frosh applicants to UC list all high school and college courses taken, even if not at the main high school. Some online high schools are listed in the link given previously, as are California community colleges.
From what I understand, UC GPA calculations only include courses from the school’s A-G list, so online AP courses not listed by the school might not count. However, you should still list them in the “additional courses” section for UC applications to show the extra effort. For the Common App, you can list these courses under “Courses & Grades” or in the “Additional Information” section. It’s always good to highlight any extra coursework to showcase your kid’s initiative and academic rigor. Anyone else have experience with this?
If the on-line provider is UC approved and the courses fit the a-g descriptions they are listed on the UC application under on-line provider academic section and if taken 10-11th grades, the grades will be included in the UC GPA calculation regardless if they are listed on the HS transcript. Non a-g courses can be listed in the awards/activities section under “other coursework” on the UC application.
Yeah, that’s correct. If the AP course isn’t on your school’s A-G list, it won’t count towards the UC GPA. But you can still list it on the UC app as an ‘Outside Course’ and on the Common App under ‘Other Courses’. Make sure to include the institute’s name, course title, and grade. It’s still worth including, as colleges will consider it in their review!
