Hi, I’m applying to colleges this fall. I’m interested in Duke, Emory, Rice, and WashU. I’ve taken the SATI three times already. Here are my scores:

December 2008-- 630 CR, 730 M, 680 W
March 2009-- 680 CR, 700 M, 800 W
May 2009-- 720 CR, 740 M, 730 W

How would colleges calculate my overall SATI score? Would they superscore and say that I got a 2260 overall, or would they take the best in one sitting and say I only got a 2190?

Also, would it hurt if I took the SAT for a fourth time and tried to raise my score to the 2300 range? Or would it be better to submit the scores I have now since taking it four times is a lot?

Thanks!

2190 or 2260, i’m sure thats good enough for even the top colleges. from my experience, the top colleges don’t really care much about your score as long as its somewhere above 2100. it will be the other factors that really get you in. so dont bother taking the sat again

^That’s generally true, but having a 2300+ as opposed to a 2150 does give a significant boost in admissions chances.

Most will say you got a 2260. Look, it’s in their interest to report your highest composite score (“superscore”), because higher scores among enrolled freshmen boost their US News rankings. so in a sense they have just as much interest in “gaming” this as you do.

But if I were you, I wouldn’t report the first score (unless the schools requires you to report ALL scores, as some now do). No subscore on your December 2008 score bring up the top; and that score accentuates the weakness of the March 2009 CR, and suggests the very strong March 2009 W score is an outlier. Better to report only the March and May scores if you can, which gives you both your highest composite and highest single-sitting scores.
