How to calculate UCLA major GPA?

Hey y’all I have a question about major GPA. If there are multiple classes that satisfy a requirement (like ‘one introductory philosophy course’ can be satisfied by Philos 1 or 2), which one do they use? The higher of the two? For example if I have an A in Philos 1, but a B in Philos 2, which one will they use to calculate major GPA?
Thanks so much!!!

Hmm, I don’t know. I imagine they might average them out or use the class grade that you earned first for that pre-req requirement, but I really don’t know.

You might want to call UCLA and ask. I think other people on this forum know better than I do about that, though, so yeah, just wait for their responses.

They probably won’t care about major gpa for a philosophy major. Major GPA is more important for students with a lot of pre-reqs such as Engineering.

There’s probably more emphasis put on it for engineering and computer science majors, but UCLA definitely considers major GPA for all majors.

^ some majors don’t even have pre-reqs

@bomerr

That’s true, so I should clarify what I said earlier: UCLA definitely considers major GPA for all majors that have pre-reqs.

The problem is a major like philosophy only has 4 courses. How much does 12 units tell them about the student as compared to 60 units?

The times when I could see major GPA playing an important role would be to spot a red flag. Something that says that applicant won’t be able to perform at the upper division level. e.g. If someone has a 3.8 GPA and is applying for Economics but has 2 Cs in Calculus, then I could see the Major GPA playing a crucial role.

@bomerr

Well, in my case, as a philosophy major, it’d be important to the UCs to see how well I can perform, especially in symbolic logic classes(All of the UCs require you to take a class in logic, except Merced. Merced doesn’t offer that major) because logic is a very important branch of philosophy. If I got a C in a logic class, you can bet that the UCs will pay special attention to that and might just reject me if I were a borderline applicant. But I’m digressing; major GPA probably doesn’t matter much except in borderline cases or for engineering/computer science majors.

I’m in the same situation except I took 2 electives at the same time, which happen to be my only philosophy classes that count towards the pre-reqs.

Im actually a psych major, but ASSIST says to take ‘one introductory philosophy course’. Thanks everyone for the responses.
