Hi. I was wondering how to calculate my weighted GPA. I know the number system, but should I count nonacademic classes such as P.E. and Chorus? I even took a second science class (that didn’t offer an honors option) in addition to my Honors Chemistry class during sophomore year-should I count that even though it’s not part of the “Big Five” subjects? Thanks.

P.S. I seem to think that the weighted GPA system may be flawed as taking extra courses with no honors option actually decreases your GPA even if you get an A.

yes you are correct there.

first, does your school weight classes? if no, then you won’t have a weighted GPA. if anything, ask your GC for your GPA. I’m sure they have it on file.

Check your school handbook for GPA calculation information. If it’s not there, then contact your school counselor or administrator. Seems like every school calculates weighted GPA differently. This should be explained in the school profile that counselors send with transcripts to colleges so that colleges can understand that school’s weighting system.

Remember that colleges often have their own weighting system, to add uniformity to the apps.
