But I don’t know what to do about a mattress. Part of me just wants to buy the mattress from Room and Board at the same time as the bed since it is less hassle. Another part of me is convinced I would be overpaying. But honestly if we’re talking about $100-$200 more, I’d rather overpay and avoid the hassle of multiple deliveries and vendors.

How do you go about selecting a mattress for a guest bedroom? Any suggestions? The Room and Board selections have a crazy-wide price range and I have no idea what any of the terms mean. I’ve gone to the store and have lain in the beds but I can’t tell much difference.

It’s been 20 years since I last bought a mattress and I’ve been very happy with my “pillow top” mattress which was all the rage back then. Not even sure that’s a category any more.

So, help me choose. I don’t like memory foam beds. I would like to do this on-line if possible.

I’m also looking for bedding suggestions but maybe that’s a separate thread …

No one would ever describe my decorating sense as ‘traditional’ which is why I loved that I could find some really contemporary looks with quilts. I like quilts for practicality, but not for the traditional look that they’re normally associated with. That being said, you could probably come up with some traditional looks from Pine Cone Hill, too.

Once I discovered their products, I found the closest store near me so I could go see them in person. At that store, I picked out a quilt I liked, and the staff helped me pick out coordinating decorative pillows/sheets/blankets/window treatments. I actually have their quilts on all three of our bedrooms now.

Well, I just went through this and ended up with a mattress from Target- but I think you are going for a little nicer one. I did look at costco when I was shopping and they had different price ranges at the store. If you could pick out what seemed right - I believe they deliver ? and you could order on line.

We got our mattress and box spring from Costco and bought the only full-size model they had. They tend to only have one brand and model per size. Sam’s also has them. Our Costco doesn’t deliver but Costco.com does–sometimes charging extra. We had my nephews help get the mattress from the store to our home and bedroom. My friend bought from Sears and got them to deliver and haul away her old bed.

We recycled our old queen mattresses to the guest room and got ourselves a new one. Now we have a king bed but the guest one will last forever. If you intend to have any long term (ie weeks, not days) guests consider a quality mattress. No matter which price level you choose be sure the mattress is the right firmness- we now have a softer high quality one and the old one is too firm for my taste (I think son likes it).

Whatever you do, invest in a mattress pad. The ads for “8 years’ worth of dust mites et al” I’ve seen on TV don’t allow for that stuff going into the pad you wash when you wash sheets, sparing the mattress.

We also buy allergy encasings, as mattress pads DO NOT protect against dust and dust mites, only encasins do. We have encased all our mattresses and box springs and pillows PLUS we use mattress pads we launder regularly in very hot water with bedding. Has made a world of difference in reducing allergens.

As a platform bed, I’d just make sure to get individual pocketed coils because those don’t transfer motion very much when one person rolls around in the night. Don’t need a box spring. I would not get a pillow top mattress because the tops wear down long before the mattress itself does. I’d think about getting a memory foam mattress topper. We bought our kid one from Costco when she had labrum surgery. I’d go 3" or more.

I haven’t bought a mattress in years. It used to be that Sealy, for example, had a system of straps while Simmons used individual pocket coils. Whatever the brand, I think what matters is that it not transfer motion and that it be relatively firm. Let a mattress topper add softness if needed.
