How to clean laptops?

Ok, I have this spray stuff to get fingerprints off the screen, but how do you get scummy stuff off the casing of the laptop? Is it ok to use water? I don’t want to damage it.

i just use water to clean my powerbook.

dont like douse it in water or anything, but just use a damp cloth and you should be fine

You might want to take out the battery first, just to be on the safe side, but it’s probably not a big deal.

They make LCD cleaning wipes or something…never tried them.

I used to always clean my CRT’s with glass cleaner though its supposed to be bad (never had any problems).

Just dont push hard.

Seriously, the magnesium alloy casing is so prone to greasy finger prints. rawr

dont use water or windex on any exposed lcd surfaces!!!

i use a can of compressed air to get rid of dust and junk stuck in the keyboard, kimwipes (the stuff you use in chem labs to clean spectrophotometer cuvettes) or lint-free wipes for the monitor, and rubbing alcohol to clean the keyboard.

karthikkito… why no windex? I clean my LCD TV with windex all the time. :frowning:

I use lysol wipes and canned air to clean my laptop… and I clean it alot. Alcohol wipes work well too but smell wierd.

ammonia is caustic…not too sure about the chem behind it, but it isn’t very pretty. dont worry about what you’ve done so far, especially if you don’t see any damage. however, it builds, so…

Apple makes a product called IKlear for all IPods, IBooks, etc…but it works great on eletronics too, and inexpensive. I got a deluxe pack with like two bottles of spray, the microfiber cloth and travel wipes for like 20 bucks…which is pretty much enough crap to clean a small army of lap tops for several years.

I used isopropyl alcohol to clean off the IHS on my cpu before applying arctic silver and a new heatsink.

I used the same along with some turpentine (the acetone bottle was empty) to do the same thing to the ram and gpu on my videocard which was some nasty stuff that didnt come off with the alcohol…just make sure you clean it good with alcohol after the turpentine

Not that that really applies to cleaning the outside of your case…well I suppose the alcohol could actually work pretty well.

I have “monitor cleaner” and all it is is isopropyl alcohol.
