I left olive oil way too long in a mister and it is very rancid and sticky. I tried using hot water and dish detergent to clean it, but that didn’t work. Now I’m trying white vinegar. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Throw it away and get a new one :(

Try microwaving it first to warm up the sticky oil-- then when it gets ruined, then you throw it away…

Haha! But I try never to throw away anything I can reclaim. The vinegar seems to be working better than the detergent.

I admit that my first reaction was, “Mister Who?”

If the vinegar doesn’t do the job (and I’d try warming the vinegar for a little extra punch) then I’d rinse it well, and then load it up with full-strength Greased Lightning (cleanser) and squirt away. (Probably at something like a shower pan or tub that could make use of the Greased Lightning anyway.) It is a pretty powerful degreaser. You’d need to rinse it really, really well afterward.

I might not be inclined to spend that much time and effort on it, though, unless a new one would run more than $20 or so.

I just don’t like the idea of filling the landfill with more stuff. If I can’t reclaim it, I just won’t get another one. My H brought this home.

Costco has the double mister set in stock (at least in my area). $20 for two stainless steel misters. Great set. I also don’t like to throw things away but you can easily spend more resources trying to clean the old than simply replacing it. Depending on the material of the rancid container - it may be completely recyclable.

Did you try Dawn? Boil Dawn and water (I use this to clean a greasy pan too), then pour in the mister and let sit until it’s cool. You won’t need much Dawn. You could also try baking soda and vinegar, before the Dawn treatment.

I could go anywhere in the world and not get better advice than I get here. I LOVE it!

Let us know which works!!
