so last summer i went on this 3-wk summer program at a location very near to my house, and still my parents missed me like crazy and vowed “not to let me go to a summer program next yr”

Attending MITES will be a DREAM come true- i’ve been wanting to apply for almost 2 years but i dont even think they would LET me apply.
how do i convince my parents that i shouldnt “waste” the summer of my jr yr working.

Well first you have to get them to at least let you apply. Show them the academic benefits of attending a great summer program (both current and future for college). You must convey to them that attending MITES will be more than just a summer camp and a taste of the real college experience. You’ll be gone in a few years, and they’ll have to let go then…why not help them ease into it now? When I went away for six weeks this summer, it definitely prepared my mom for what is to come in the next two years.

Between the deadline and now, look for other things to do over the summer. Show them that you don’t have all of your eggs in one basket and that there are other productive things that you can do. Perhaps look at a few other summer programs. If you do get in and they still can’t grasp the idea of letting you go, make sure to remind them that its FREE and you’ll actually be learning…at MIT! I really don’t see how they could say no after that.
