How to Deepen Friendships In College

So, I’m a second-year in college. I’m involved with a lot of clubs, some that meet more than others. Because of these clubs, I have many acquaintances. However, I want to start investing closer friendships with some of these acquaintances, but I am having trouble doing so because there is seemingly more lectures in the types of clubs that I’m involved in and less time to connect with people. What are some ways to develop closer friendships with people that are in my clubs without any awkward conversations? I know that one of the most crucial steps is to get their contact info, but I just do not feel that there is enough time in the clubs to make them comfortable enough giving me their contact info. Thanks.

You will probably develop closer relationships by inviting someone to go do something, such as have a meal or coffee, away from the club. If they live in your dorm you could invite to watch Netflix or hang out.

Spending time together, being honest and real about your struggles, being yourself. I’m fortunate in that my roommate this year and I have become super close, almost like brothers. We share everything, laughs, tears, fun. Crying with someone will certainly bring you close to that person. Once we learned we could cry openly in front of each other, or together without being judged or ridiculed, that was when we became close. Now we will go through the whole day, work at night, keeping everything bottled up until we get home, then let it all out and comfort each other. It’s awesome.

Ask them to grab lunch, go out to do something with you, find a common interest and see a movie/volunteer/go to another thing with you on campus/bond over something stupid that happened during the meeting/talk to people you normally pass by in your dorm/start a conversation with people that are working at the library. The perfect excuse would just to be honest “Hey! I am interested in getting to know you more outside of the club. I think your… was super interesting. Wanna grab lunch sometime?” Alternatively “I’m gonna do … after the club, but … said they couldn’t come. Would you like to join me?”

You can always just say something along the lines of “Hey you guys seem really cool, we should hang out sometimes after the club meeting.”

Parties, dinner parties, communal meals, concerts together, hiking, camping. It’s all about shared experiences.

Thanks everyone. I got help and have better ideas on how to come about this situation

We played cards. And be careful about the Netflix invite, “Netflix and chill” has a different meaning to today’s college generation than @NorthernMom61 might realize.

I agree that asking them to get coffee, or go to some other related activity (like a movie or other event on campus) is good. My D1 made good friends when they made an overnight road trip for one club she was in. The other bonded in study groups .

If any freshmen are reading this, especially ones where I go to school, a great way to become friends with upperclassmen is to use your excess food from your freshman meal plans to buy food for the person you want to be friends with.

But seriously, just be nice, talk to other people in your classes to meet new faces, and meet up outside of classes to do other stuff.
