How to develop thicker skin in life?

“My family is like OPs – pretty old school – why do you need to talk to someone when you have us?”

You might ask "do you want to do my (insert medical procedure) too? And if the say something like “that requires training”, you can explain how a trained therapist is very different from “someone to talk to”.

Thanks for all the guidance! I will get a hold of my school’s counseling center in the fall, and until then, I can just wait it out, I guess. (?) I’m so busy with the farm that I don’t know if I’d even have time for it right now anyway. They’re really depending on me for markets and we’re starting to sell a lot.

And thanks for relating to me, Classof2015. My family of farmers (which includes aunts, uncles and cousins) truly is inclusive to the point of… kinda suffocating. We live near each other, work together, eat lunch and dinner together, hang out after quitting time together, we went to high school together, and it’s just always about us being together as a family. This is great and I know that I’m truly blessed to have a close bond with my family, but as you all have said, sometimes you just really need to focus on your own path, especially when it’s so different from and not supported by your family.

I feel bad for feeling like this, but i guess I can’t help that I have different interests in life, and I know it’s all not worth this anxiety. Nothing is worth compromising your health over.

I think using your university health system is an excellent idea. My son has used his for mental health issues and we would have no idea except that he told us. I’ve never received any communication from the university about it. Make sure your university handles it the same way so you can feel safe and comfortable. Best of luck to you.
