I have a difficulty filling out the forms. My son, who is 21, failed all his classes this last semester because of depression and other issues. He is not attending this semester but hasn’t decided whether he will re-enroll next year. We are probably not going to be paying directly (we may help him pay back loans if he successfully finishes the semester) but he needs to get a unsubsidized loan to do this. He is currently looking for a job. In the meantime, we also have a senior who will definitely be going to college next year. If I am filling out FAFSA and Profile, how do I do this? First of all, for the senior, can I put down 2 students since he hasn’t graduated from college and may well be going back in the fall? Next, for him, how do I do the FAFSA if he isn’t sure which college he will go to? He may return to the one he just was in or he may enroll in a certificate program at another one or transfer to another college? I am just wanting to make sure he has the option of getting that unsubsidized loan if he ends up turning his life around for the better. Before this episode of major depression, he had a 3,7 GPA.

Hmmm…in the end you will likely have to verify whether this son IS in fact in college next year. If your high school senior receives financial aid with the idea that there are two in college and he does NOT actually go, you will have your aid reduced. If you have already received aid, you could be in a position to have to pay it back, one would think.

Call one of your senior’s colleges and ask them. Perhaps they will give you an answer.

I’m thinking I would NOT put him down because he is not in school now. BUT that is me.
