How to dress to community college

I know its a silly question, but I don’t know much about community college

I skimmed thru the ‘cc vs university’ thread so I at least understand I am going to be younger than probably 95% of the people there… Great! (I’m 18 years old graduating out of HS)

So I was wondering… how should one dress (Especially my age) for community college? Can I dress what I regularly wear to public high school? Which is, btw, a coat/sweater/jeans in the winter and fall. And during the summer – sweat shorts/cargo shorts with t-shirts

Or do I have to wear a collar shirt and tie with normal pants instead of jeans. I don’t want to pop-out and look out of norm compared to all of the other older adults or students!

While at a community college there are older students (25+) that attend, many are taking night classes or online classes and who you will mostly see traipsing around campus are kids between the ages of 17 - 23. And guess what? No one, absolutely no one has the ability to guess if a student is 17 or 19 or 23… you all look the same in that age group. If you don’t advertise your age or HS graduation date, no one will know or even care.

Wear for college what you wear for high school–there are students who are jeans/shorts/tshirt and other students who are chinos/nice pants/button down shirt or polo shirt. Wear what makes you comfortable and chances are about 1/3 of the campus is wearing something similar.

No tie! Unless you are going to Brigham Young or some other ultra conservative school a tie would actually look goofy. Again, though, you will occasionally see a student in a tie - they may be giving a special speech or presentation or be headed to an interview, etc. But really, no one cares anymore… this is college and people are just getting their lives going.

Go on a “field trip” and scope out the college this summer…go to the library, the student center, book store, and just look and see what it is like, what people wear, etc. I know I am the type that feels better when I have seen the lay of the land, and perhaps you are too. So just go and do it, take a friend or parent if you want, and wander around the campus ahead of time.

My students dress as they did for high school. The average age at our CC has gone down, so you will probably not feel as though you are much younger. Many of the people who bring up the age average attend at night.

You can dress as you did during your high school years. Dress comfortably. I would bring a jacket (unless you are attending school in someplace especially warm), as buildings can be cool (AC). Dress with respect for yourself in mind (no pants hanging past your butt, no swimsuits (unless you are taking a swimming PE class), a shirt). If you wish to dress casual-professionally you can, but that it up to you. The only exceptions to wearing what you wish, are for lab course. Closed toed shoes, and pants are a must for those classes (safety reasons). There are people of all ages (16+) at the colleges that I have attended.
