How to get a 36 on ACT English

Currently for English I’m at a 33-34 range can someone tell me what I should do to get in the 35-36 range thank you for your time and expertise

Study more and answer all the questions correctly?

You need to evaluate the types of question you are missing in the English section. I divide the questions into three types: grammar, organization, and purpose.

The grammar simply takes practice and you need a good workbook. I recommend Erika Meltzer’s ACT English Book. You need to get used to dashes, commas/semicolons/punctuation, verb tenses, conciseness, transitions, etc. Keep in mid OMIT is only right about 50% of the time. When evaluating transition words, if an answer has no transition it is usually correct.

The organization questions are the ones I find the most time consuming. You just have to plug in each answer and logically think about it. A clue that you will be asked about organization is the presence of bracketed numbers and letters. If you see these, you will be asked about organization. When you read, you must read every line, and in the back of your mind, be thinking about the order of sentences and paragraphs. Is the information making sense and progressing as it should?

Purpose questions were brutal for me, at first. Before reading a passage, look at the end of it and see if there is a purpose question (“Suppose the writer had intended to…”). If there is one, read the question. Do this so after answering the other 14 questions, you will know immediately if it is yes or no. Then just pick the logical answer. If it is a more challenging question (these are rare here), look at the title and introduction and conclusion.

Is time your problem? Lastly, no matter what, you need to read every line of the passage, even if there is no purpose/organization question. A lot of the harder questions require passage context.

First thank you for responding, I have Erica L. Meltzer’s Complete guide to ACT English, and I have improved from a 16 to a 32-34 range respectively, but need to be in 35-36 range consistently. I know probably 99% of the rules, but idioms, and rhetoric might be my biggest problem. i read every line and time is not a problem I finish with 12-15 mins to double check my work i just cant seem to get an 100% or -1 on a reading passage i always get -2,-3, or -4.

Finishing with 12-15 minutes remaining, to me, means you are going way too fast. Why rush it so much? Finishing with 5 minutes is a better plan. Rarely does the ACT test idioms, the September ACT had one tricky one, but they are not worthy of intense preparation.

@DAVE437 wow…did that book actually work? from 16 to 32-34 is amazing! Can you tell me more about that Erica L. Meltzer’s ACT English?

@golfcashoahu You said the Sept. ACT had a tricky idiom question. Was it in the last English passage? (Can’t talk about specific questions so… hehehe I can just point to which passage)

@cucuru Its really good and tells you everything you need to know for the act English

Take 6 languages and read the dictionary, worked for me.

well, I got a 36 on English, and I’m pretty sure it has to do with speaking the language my entire life

@sey927 Seriously, man I really trying to improve from the 33/34 range to the 35/36 range

@DAVE437 I don’t really know what else to say other than tell you to go over all the grammatical rules tested on the ACT (I’m sure you can find them online) and then work on identifying those grammatical errors in sample questions. I had bought the ACT online review beforehand, and it’s really good for familiarizing yourself with the types of questions and the format. You’ll start to see patterns, I believe.

@sey927 Does the act have list of what need to know on their website for the English Test and all the Test

@DAVE437 Going over difficult idioms is good prep imo for a 35-36 range

@glassflowers idk I feel like I know all the rules but I keep missing 4-2 questions on the English section of the Test :)]

Oh :frowning: Are they random types of questions or “specific”? Also, have you taken the test before?

I have taken it once before but taken numerous practice ACT English test and no it not specific types of question

OMG THANKS FOR POSTING THIS THREAD!!! I WAS JUST GUNA ASK THE SAME THING!!
Like I keep scoring 33-34, but I’m really aiming for a 36. I guess I’ll start analyzing every single mistakes I make. That might help
