How to Get a Job @ Morgan Stanley?

Hi, I’m a senior at Columbia who recently became interested in working at a top financial firm. I have a 3.7 in sociology. Do I have a chance of getting into firms like Morgan Stanley and McKinsey? What are recruiters looking for exactly? I know the process started this fall, but I’m hoping I’m not too late. I’m specifically interested in the summer analyst program at Morgan Stanley: <a href=“Careers in Finance and Investment Banking | Morgan Stanley”>Careers in Finance and Investment Banking | Morgan Stanley. Help?

As a senior you wouldn’t be looking for a summer analyst program, you would be looking for a permanent analyst position. Most of those firms offer permanent positions to their summer interns from the year before, that’s why Junior year summer internship is crucial. If you are just starting to look as a senior, the best way is through your career center, apply through them. Each firm recruits at its target schools, most of the time they will not look beyond those schools. If you have missed the “normal recruiting” (like this fall), you maybe too late.

I am surprised you are not asking your questions at Columbia’s career office. Banking offers for seniors (especially investment banking) are made around this time of the year, so yes, you are late if you haven’t started applying.

McKinsey is not even a financial firm, it’s a consulting firm.

Most firms generally run their recruitment for undergrads during the fall and that process for most firms is now typically finished (or if it’s still going on they’re doing final interviews in later rounds) so it’s a bit late to be applying for next year.

the top firms have already hired for the year-- so you should look into doing something that will build your resume so you can apply again in the future. One possibility is teach for america, which has a program with some of the top banks (including morgan stanley I think).

My kid’s friends already got their jobs at Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs this past fall for next year.
