How to get an outside-school rec letter?

So I work at a Mathnasium and I decided I wanted to get a rec letter from my supervisor for my college apps. I am not experienced with CommonApp yetdon’t know how the process/interface is for non-teachers, and I was just wondering if there are any specific things I need to let him know about the CommonApp or like things I would include in my email to him in order for him to have everything he needs for the letter. Thanks for your help!

Most schools want LOR’s from classroom teachers.
Work supervisors can type up a letter and sign it, and you can take a picture and download it.
Have a brag sheet available for your supervisor which includes:
coursework, hobbies, sports, activities.

Aunt_bea, this is not accurate. The applicant does not (and cannot) “take a picture and download it” into the Common App. In the Common App, in the “Invite and Manage Recommenders” section, the applicant “Invites” someone (teachers, coach, supervisor) to complete and submit their recommendation into the Common App. The applicant does not see the letter. Once submitted into the Common App, the applicant can then “Manage” their recommendations by assigning certain recommendations to certain schools. It is true that most want letters from teachers, but there are plenty that will also accept recommendations from supervisors, coaches, etc. The applicant can choose - when completing the Common App - which schools will receive which letters.

PaulTutoc (original poster) - go to the Common App resources and read about and familiarize yourself with how the Recommenders section of the Common App works. It’s all there. Applicant Support

No, but he can download a copy for his counselor and himself for his personal file. I didn’t mention the Common app, although he did.

The instructors and counselors are the ones who typically fill out their sections on the Common Ap.

Common app has an ‘other’ too and an email is sent to that person.

@tsbna44 is correct. Both of my kiddos obtained letters from non-teachers using the “other” feature. Both of mine knew their recommenders would highlight their leadership abilities, but a brief email with topics/characteristics you would like your recommender to highlight, or a brag sheet as suggested upthread, is appropriate.
