My moms taxes are messed up . when she filed her taxes they put the wrong information so i cant put that info in for the financial aid . what do i do
What is your mother doing to fix the mess and when will it be fixed/amended?
Who put the wrong information- and what wrong information did they put?
Start at the beginning. The person who files your mom’s taxes is YOUR MOM. So where did she input incorrect information? Nobody files for you- you have to sign your own tax return verifying that you have read the form and that the information is correct.
Errors get made of course- so take us back to the beginning and maybe we can help you.
And this is the 2016 tax return you are talking about…right?
- What were the mistakes?
- Any chance your mom is planning to amend this 2016 return with accurate information?
I have to say…we made some small mistakes once on a tax return…and the IRS caught up with us ASAP. They had the right info…and we omitted something. They sent us a very nice letter showing us what they corrected…and they were correct! We had to pay the difference.
If it had been a financially aid year, we would, have needed to amend out tax return.
- File an amended tax return with the correct information
- Enter the information from the amended return by hand, rather than from the IRS transfer tool
If you amend your taxes, I don’t believe you can use the IRS data retrieval tool. So…you will need to order a tax transcript as well.
