How to get into a top university?

I am going to be a freshman in high school this year. I was wondering which academic route I should take in order to get into a top university (UCLA, Stanford, etc.)

Route A: orchestra 4 years, 7 honors classes, 6 AP classes

Route B: no orchestra, 7 honors classes, 10 AP classes

For a lot of schools 6 APs should be enough. It depends on what most people will be taking at your school. If most don’t take 6, then you should be fine as long as orchestra is a great passion of yours.

I wouldn’t make that kind of decision right now. You don’t yet know how you’ll be in AP classes, or how they’ll affect your extra curricular activities. What I would suggest is that you plan to take one AP class as a freshman with orchestra and get a feel for the general intensity. From there, you can go as you feel comfortable with. I won’t pretend to know anything about orchestra, but sophomore year I was able to handle two AP classes, one dual enrollment, and three honors with a president position and a high level science fair project. You might be surprised at the things that you can handle. I wouldn’t completely let go of the idea of taking 10 AP classes and still participating in orchestra.

In freshman year, we can’t take any AP classes. I would like to take 10 AP classes with orchestra, but I can’t. I can only do 10 AP classes if I quit orchestra because of scheduling conflicts. There are only 6 periods in a day at my school.

do orchestra.

Do you enjoy orchestra? If you do, I’d keep it, especially since it would show consistency. You don’t need to aim to take 10 AP classes. But it wouldn’t really matter which path you choose, I think.

Orchestra. To top schools, there’s not much difference between 6 and 10 APs.
