How to get involved / contribute to space travel?

I’m just curious, do you have to have a genuis IQ and a doctorate in order to create next-generation space-craft, like nuclear powered, or laser-powered craft.</p>

<p>I really like science fiction and I have always been fascinated by space-travel, but I don’t want to go into aerospace engineering if I’ll end up just punching into some 9 to 5 without making a difference. Thats what I’m asking, how could one make a difference and like really change the face of space travel? Would this be more a job of a physicist?</p>

<p>The way you make a difference is either get lucky by starting out your own company and not failing, or by punching into some 9 to 5 and working your way up to the top. Other than that, a doctorate would be helpful, as being a professor would help get you what you want too.</p>
