How to get your GPA up?

I know this is probably the wrong place to ask this but I am currently going into 9th grade at a very competitive high school (in the best 50 in the usa) and in 8th grade I had all highschool classes for which I got credits. My GPA was 3.4 unweighted. Is there anyway that during my 4 years in HS I can raise that to a 5.0 GPA? And will my 8th grade GPA (for which I got HS credits) count if I can become a Valedictorian or not? Or did my grades in 8th grade mess up the rest of my HS GPA? Thanks!

If you were not valedictorian of your kindergarten class, you may be in trouble

You’ll have to ask your counselor, but here at the middle school I attended, high school courses taken during 8th grade didn’t factor into my high school GPA.

I’m assuming your school is on a 5-point scale, meaning that your 3.4 GPA in 8th grade had a few C’s factored into it. This begs the question: why would you take the extra classes if you were just going to do badly in them?

There is obviously no way you can bring your GPA to a 5.0, because a 5.0 is perfect, and a bunch of C’s isn’t perfect.

As for the question, “how to get your GPA up” - it’s pretty simple, just get good grades.

8th grade does not count

and at a few top colleges, such as Johns Hopkins, even 9th grade doesn’t count

I’m assuming you took 5 classes and got 6 B’s and 4 A’s. So, if you get all A’s in high school, taking 6 classes a semester, you’ll have a 3.869 GPA. Don’t worry about being valedictorian; do your best.

Sorry I meant 4.0 not 5.0. My mistake.

Ok your middle school gpa shouldn’t affect your high school gpa but all schools are different. But high school courses taken during middle school will most likely affects your high school gpa. If you did not get As in all your high school courses, there is no possible way to achieve a 4.0 unweighted gpa. It is possible to achieve over a 4.0 weighted gpa if you take honors, ap, or de classes (depends on your school). Most likely, you will not be val. if you already got less than an A in high school courses and you’re attending a top 50 high school in the usa. Im not saying it is impossible buyout got too much competition, there’s a reason that high school was named top 50. Don’t sweat it though, being Val doesn’t mean instant success or easy acceptance into top colleges. You still have to do other things (ECs, good rec from teachers, sat, other factors as well)
