How to Go About Preparing for Transferring

I got into [Mt. Aloysius](http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?match=true&collegeId=1324&type=qfs&word=Mt.%20Aloysius) and [St. Francis](http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=1505&type=qfs&word=St.%20Francis) but I don’t plan to stick with either one. I want to transfer to a school in New York so I can, at the very least, experience it before I die and get it out of my system. :D

I didn’t apply to any schools in NY for three reasons-- my grades dropped my senior year of high school (I graduated from a cyber school. I could keep up in classes like English, History, Web Design, etc. but Chem almost killed me.), my SAT Math score was only 500, and I was unsure of my ability to live in another state (I live in PA) so I hesitated. Now, though, I want to give it a shot and I’m not sure what to do.

First of all, I think St. Francis is better but I’m still stuck on Mt. Aloysius. It feels like home, like I could really get the help I need there to prove that I’m not a bad student (not that I couldn’t get that help at St. Francis). However, I’m not sure if going there would, in any way, hurt my chances of transferring.

Secondly, what classes should I take? I’m not sure what I want to major in yet so I’m looking to start out in Exploratory. NYU (Yeah, I know, far reach but hey, why sell myself short before I even give it a shot?) suggests taking liberal arts courses but would simply taking “regular” classes hurt me? I’m not looking to slack off, I just don’t know what I want to do yet.

Mind you, I plan on talking to a counselor and trying to get involved in things that’ll make me look better. Also, since I’m going to try and aim higher than where I’m currently at, I know there’s a chance I could fail and am open to suggestions for other schools. The areas that I’m interested in (so far) are Computer Science, Business, and Communications and Journalism.

Besides the obvious NYU and Columbia in New York City, there’s also Fordham University. You may want to look into that as well.

(Also in the NYC but “below” NYU/Columbia/Fordham are Pace University, Marymount Manhattan College, Wagner College, St. John’s University, New York Institute of Technology)

If you want to go to school in New York you should definitely apply to NYU and Fordham. (Maybe also one from the second list as a backup) A good tranfer applicant is one who has a high GPA in courses that readily transfer. By liberal arts curriculum, they mean they want varied courses in the main fields…a math (pref Calculus I), english/writing, a history, a science. Remember that your college GPA will be by far the #1 factor, so you’re going to want to make sure you take what you can handle and that you spend alot of time on your studies.
