My daughter had admission interviews with 3 recruiters who had traveled from the opposite coast to interview prospective applicants. Since the interviews, she has corresponded with them by email with questions and to let them know that she was happy to be accepted to their universities. Now, she has decided to attend elsewhere. How should she handle the declines? She should email each recruiter or just email or call the admissions department to let them know she won’t be attending. This is a little awkward because my daughter has established nice relationships [via email post interview] with these recruiters and they all are encouraging her to attend their school. She received another tee shirt in the mail today from a recruiter. Thank you in advance for your advice.
In encouraging your daughter to attend and sending goodies, the recruiters are just doing the jobs they’re paid for, which at this point is maximizing yield–it’s really not personal. She is one of many students they have dealt with each year and before long they won’t even remember her name. A response to Admissions is appropriate; separate emails thanking the recruiters for their interest and stating that a decision has been made to attend elsewhere would certainly be nice, but isn’t necessary.
Yes, please let them know ASAP to free up a spot for other students on the waitlist
