How to improve chances to top universities?

This summer I was really hoping to work at breakthrough collaborative (great program, you can google it) but as this is very competitive for high school students I was “waitlisted” Looking forward, I could find a normal, non-glamorous, minimum wage summer job at grocery store/ice cream shop/other non-interesting locations or I can try to get an internship with an investing firm in my surrounding area (have some connections, I think I could work out a non-paid internship somewhere). My question is, looking toward college, which would look better on a resume – the normal summer job, or an internship. I would almost prefer the job so that I could make some money and start investing on my own using Etrade/Scottrade/etc…as investing is my passion(although it really is not shown in my ECs this far). Also, I was looking at being a life-guard at a local water park…I have heard that this looks especially good because it shows responsibility. Opinions? Thanks.
