How to improve SAT score from 2110?

Hey guys,

I received a 2110 on my first OFFICIAL attempt at the SAT 1s, but after that, I just can’t seem to improve my score.
The funnier thing is, I know the right answer to all the questions I got wrong; none of the questions I got wrong are due to my lack of knowledge!
I usually score low 600s on my reading and low 700s on my writing.
I’m sure plenty of CC users have had this problem as well, mind giving me some tips to not be so careless? If I use the elimination method for both CR and W sections, would there be enough time left?

I’d love to score 2200+ or even 2300! :(

I assume when you say “I just can’t seem to improve my score” you mean you’ve been practicing a lot and you haven’t been getting better. At this point, it would seem that you can’t improve on your own.

First, try a review book. These have lots of strategies that you can try. Some companies (Barrons) are harder than the actual SAT, and can be a good prep course. Of course, without 3rd party, human feedback, the usefulness of these courses is limited.

So, I’d recommend taking a SAT course. I don’t mean group courses offered at your school, but one-on-one tutoring for the SAT. My sister went through the Huntington course, and went from the 2000s to a 2330. Sure, it was expensive, but now she’s going to MIT. It definitely seems worth it. Another kid I know did Huntington and went from a 2100 to a 2400. If it was possible for him, it’s possible for you.

If the cost is worrying you, you could try getting a tutor from an online site, but the quality won’t be guaranteed.

@tryhardclass Could you please provide the exact score breakdown? It seems to me that you are in the same situation as I was at the beginning of junior year (I had a 2140 - also with a strong math score), but I was able to bring it up to a 2320 by the end of junior year with limited prep. Also, what grade will you be entering this fall?

I would be more than happy to provide some self-study tips! :)

Hey @ajtalkar, thanks for the advice. I’m currently taking a SAT course right now, but its not that that effective. However, I don’t think my parents would allow me to take another course, as they are really expensive. I think online courses would be best now, going to check some out soon.

@EngineBus2015 Hey! It really helps to hear from someone who used to be in the same situation as me. I am a rising senior, so I’ll be entering Grade 12 this fall. Not sure what you mean by limited prep, but getting a 2320 would truly be a dream for me! I PM’d you, hope you respond!

@tryhardclass I took the SAT twice both with only help from a teacher on the essay section . I took it in junior year and got 2100 almost like you a mid 600 on the reading , a 700 on the writing and a mid 700s on the Math . I took it again last May and got 2280. I only went through better books and good links. I believe that you can always improve the second time by atleast a 100 points.
For math I’d recommend Dr Chungs helped my 750 become an 800
For the writing I improved to 780. The advice i can offer is pretty long.I don’t want to type it unless you ask for it. If you want PM me and I’ll send it to you. :)

So I started getting messages asking for it so I’ll just post my advice here.
To all of you who got around 700 on the writing section this is how to improve-

So the fact that you got a 700 means that you miss like 3 or 4 maximum on the writing section
This shows that you are familiar with the basic and repetitive grammar concepts on the tests .
But what youll notice is that in each test the writing section will have questions that are obviously a bit advanced and you haven’t seen them before. To do this you must ensure that you are firm in the usual concepts first ( you dont want to nail the hard ones and missing a silly one!) . To do that go through The Ultimate SAT Guide at least twice even if youve read it already. Some topics are kind of vague in the book , so use the youtube or a website like engvid.com . (You should also practice with real tests all along).

Reviewing those vague rare concepts ( like the “If conditional cases” for example ) is the key to going 50 points further. Through practicing real tests you’ll come to know the weird and rare concepts. When you see them google them and learn them

After you’ve completed this step , You have to go advanced.
Go to the library and borrow a good GMAT book . The GMAT has a sentence correction section with the exact format as the SAT writing section , but the grammar is harder! The SAT will usually have 2 or 3 questions that are the level of difficulty of the GMAT ( they do this to ensure that an 800 isnt easy thing for every one)

My Experience - I used The Ultimate SAT Guide for my first time and was unsure of like 4 or 5 questions and ended up missing 4 .

The 2nd time after doing what i told you above , I left the test hall sure of all of the answers but the one I missed. ( It was a silly medium question , I nailed all the hards)

Now about the Math-

What it takes To get an 800- 1.You need to be fast no matter how good you think you are ,
2. You need to have enough time during the actual test (at least 5 minutes) to go through some if not all of the questions in that section
3.You need to be really focused , the test is really long If you get a math section say after one and a half hours you’d be kind of tired and you’ll miss to see words in the question that make a world of difference(For example one grid in question on the actual test started with a,b and c are ALL integers , then in the asked a valued for b finally , there was one wrong solution that fitted for a and b but made c not an integer while one that was correct, I hope you get what I mean)

My Books recommendation -
If youre already at 700+ , you can aim at 800 , and to be able to get it , you should be able to finish the easy and medium questions correctly as fast as possible so that you have time for those one or two weird hard questions on each section that stand between you and that 800!
I believe that the only book that makes you do this is DR Chungs Book , it makes you gain speed and its tips make some medium questions doable in seconds.

If you find this helpful , leave a thumbs up so others know it is

Thanks @ETonly‌
