I was accepted to Gallatin with a 35k scholarship, but that still leaves another ~35k left for myself and my family to cover with loans. On top of that, I intend to go to medical school. My parents are pushing for me to just attend the state school, which gave me a scholarship that covers all but 10k of the cost of attendance. Are there any ways to make NYU a more affordable option?
How horrible is efficiency housing? The housing section shows an efficiency suite at Goddard to be only about 10k, but I don’t want to be living in a broom closet. Also, there are other lines that show different amounts for an efficiency suite for 2 or 3, so does that mean that the 10k room is an efficiency single?
Rubin hall can save you some money and a cheap meal plan can also. In addition, cutting down on miscellaneous items and being smart with transportation can also save you maybe a thousand.
It’s tough to save a lot of money at NYU if you are living in their housing. It’s expensive. And yet so is off campus housing unless you find some shares that are cheap, but without knowing the scene, it can be risky. My son’s friend got about the same in scholarship money, and he will be commuting which by simple metro pass makes it affordable, since his family will not get much of a bump up in expenses with him living at home. With a part time job for his discretionary spending, the family will be paying out less than it would have cost for him to away to public options. But that’s because family is absorbing the living expenses where he’s been living for the rest of his life.
My family (and myself, for now) live in Arizona so unfortunately commuting isn’t an option for me. I definitely want to look into cheap off campus shared apartments as early as sophomore year, but I don’t want to risk that without knowing anyone or the area or anything. Thanks for the tips though, I’ll def look into Rubin and such.
no such thing as cheap housing in NYC. Even a room can cost you 12K-15K a year. Even one out in Bushwick will cost you close to that much. Getting out of the NYU housing plan is suicide.
You can save a lot by not living in Manhattan or the trendy parts of Brooklyn. Overall, I’d say that NYU housing is expensive, but not significantly above or below market rates for that area.
Also, keep in mind that just because a low-cost housing option exists, doesn’t mean you’ll be able to get it. NYU guarantees housing for freshmen, but it doesn’t a guarantee a specific type of housing.
How to Make NYU Affordable…stay in Arizona and attend your state school. Medical school loans are already in your future…why would you pile on undergrad debt? Please consider the full picture. And what if you don’t get into Med School? You’ll still have accumulated $140,000 in debt for a 4 year degree. It’s not worth it.
Med School Admission looks at GPA and MCAT scores. You can get that at any undergrad college.
