How to move furniture in NYC

D decided she is not a big city girl and will have to deal with double bed, couple of small chests, wing chair, nightstand, desk & desk chair, none of which are worth moving cross-country. We think best plan is to donate. Anyone done a NYC move and know of groups that might pickup?

@jonri, from what housingworks says on their website, they may not take much of D’s furniture (they specifically say they do not take IKEA, for example). If the driver shows up and rejects things as not being up to their standards, what’s plan B? From my quick survey, Goodwill and Salvation Army have similar restrictions.

Freecycle?

Facebook? Someone probably knows someone that is moving and can use furniture.

Search the Gypsy Furniture group on Facebook. If she posts there for a reasonable price someone will take it. Or you can do what I did, which was try to move a huge mattress 12 blocks by carrying it. Long story short I ended up on the floor of my shower crying and everything hurt. (ツ)

@rebeccar, ending up on the floor of the shower crying with everything hurting is par for the course when it comes to moving! But we will endeavor to avoid the twelve block mattress march beforehand

St. Vincent de Paul is another charity that will pick up furniture. http://www.stvincentdepaul.net/give/schedule-pickup

Craigslist – get some cash for it.
