How to not be too optimistic?

I’m just worried when I apply to HYPS (not this year), I’ll get too optimistic about those schools and then forget about my matches and safeties. Is there anything I can do to focus more on other applications instead of dreaming about HYPS all day?

Keep returning to the rejection and WL threads on CC from 2008…LOL

you just need to remind yourself that admission at those schools is never a guarantee – think about the situation you’ll be in if you don’t get accepted, and if you didn’t take your matches / safeties seriously enough, and use that as motivation – it doesn’t hurt to be hopeful though…a little wishful thinking never hurt anyone ;)

Seriously, those rejection threads are depressing. Take a look at them.

Also look at those “Post your Stanford Results” topics where there’s tons of pages where students post their admissions decisions and all their ECs, stats, etc.

read the cc rejection threads

check out the stats profiles here in cc and how the profile owners fared

check out the admit percentages, waitlist numbers, etc. of those schools

check out your school naviance and find out how many get in from your school

research other schools and see their positives

visit other schools and check them out

a combination of these and other things will help bring you back to earth and not obsess about a few highly selective ones. good luck davinci.
