I am curious about how much I will pay for West Virginia University. I am an out of state resident so it already starts off around 28 thousand. The average Financial aid at the school is 5 thousand. So that brings it to 23 thousand. Is there any ways to help me pay for the college and reduce it to about 16 thousand? I am an average student with an average GPA. So if you know any scholarships and what else I can do to help pay for college. Thanks

Probably not. Scholarships are usually given for high GPAs and test scores.

Why not go to your own state school?

I am in-state Texas. I live in Germany (parents work for the army)
My GPA is 2.5 (very poor my freshman and sophomore years) Junior year got my act together
I am taking the SAT in October
I would like to go to college for Sports Management
I have taken 3 APs and 2 Honors courses.
I am in several clubs such as MUN, Marine Biology.
I am 4 year varsity soccer player
2 year varsity football kicker
I play German club soccer as well.
I assistant coach youth kids
I am also a referee.
I have over 50 volunteer hours.
Anything I can do to better my chances? So far senior year I have a 3.8 GPA.
I am applying to UT Austin, Texas A&M, and Texas State.

Forget about UT and TAMU…you won’t get admitted. your rank is too low.

Consider the other Texas publics like Texas Tech, UT-Dallas, etc.

Are your parents saying that they will pay $16k per year? If not, where does that number come from?

What about Texas State
And 16k is what my parents said they would pay

You should apply to most/all of the Texas publics that are below UT and TAMU.

What do you like about Texas State? I’ve barely have heard about it. Those of us outside of Tx mostly hear about UT, TAMU, Tex Tech, UT-Dallas, Arlington, UTEP, UNT, etc.

It is HIGHLY unlikely you’d get 4 years’ worth of scholarships to bring WVU down to $16k. Scholarships are awarded for academic performance, and as you admit, yours are modest.

Private scholarships are usually for freshman year only, so you wouldn’t have the funds for years 2, 3, & 4. Nearly all of multi-year private scholarships have a “need” component, so you wouldn’t qualify (need to be low-income).

BTW…does the $16k per year include the costs to fly you back and forth to Germany?

Texas State is the 3rd largest university in Texas. And its location is better than any.
I fly to and from Germany for free.

What do you like about TSU? Does it have Sports Mgmt for undergrad?

The location, Big School, decent football, Sports Management, it doesn’t have an NCAA soccer team but it has a VERY good club team funded by the school.

Then you have a school in mind. As others have said, look at any of the TX schools where your numbers are good. When you get your SAT1 scores, you can also look at schools where your test scores put you in the upper 5% or so. You might get some merit money that way, maybe even at WVU. But barring that, WVU is not giving out much to to anyone. The state does have Promise, a program for in staters, but the school does not meet full need as it is.

TxState might be a very good match for you. It is affordable and has very strong Sports Mgt/Training as well as Marine Biololgy (lots of fish experts!). Please give that school a hard look!
