<p>Obviously, the american pronunciation of visage is vizij. The French one, however, is visahj. I speak French and English (I’m Canadian) so I always say it the french way. Is this okay? Is it a case of “you say tomayto and I say tomaaato?” P.S. the reason I care so much is because it’s for a poem to be entered in a Canadian contest where mirage needs to rhyme with visage.</p>

<p>Honestly, if someone pronounced it “visej”, I would have no idea what they were talking about. The only way I’ve ever heard it pronounced is the French way, and no, it doesn’t sound pretentious.</p>

<p>It’s vice-ij here in Michigan, but people often say Michiganders have a weird way of talking (we don’t generally pronounce the g’s in ing words, etc.)</p>
<p>It’s vi-zij. If it’s just a written contest, and you won’t be performing it, you need to change that. If performing it is part of the contest, then perhaps you can use the alternate pronunciation and get away with it.</p>

<p>I’ve lived in four US states along the East Coast and in two other continents - I have never heard it pronounced in any way but the French way. Based on the comments here, there is no single “American” pronunciation; feel free to take poetic license and let it rhyme with mirage!</p>

<p>I love French. Instead of saying “8 o’clock, Starbucks, be there,” I always tell others “let’s * rendezvous* at the Starbucks, 8 o’clock.” Boring phrase -> instant pickup line.</p>
