i want to take Algebra 2 Honors in Freshmen, but sadly, it isnt available until sophomore. can you talk the school to it? how?

I think it would depend on your school district. In our system, there are tests students can take to place out of certain math classes. Are you currently scheduled to take Algebra II without honors next year?

Ask your counselor. Usually they’re very reasonable about putting you in the classes you want, especially if you’re a dedicated student. That’s how I got to take AP Psychology sophomore year without taking regular psychology first.

actually, algebra 2 regular and honors courses weren’t available to freshmen:(

Most school districts have a math sequence that you must follow. There are usually ways to accelerate the sequence so that you can take classes ahead of the normal schedule. Your parents need to meet with your counselor to see what are your options.

Most likely you would have to test out of the usual freshman math (geometry) to be allowed to take the next math in the sequence (algebra II). Most likely, you also just missed the chance to take freshman math over the summer. :(

so you need to pass a test in order to get into the next math sequence regardless of your grade level?

Typically you will have to pass a test or take a course over the summer to prove proficiency. Is there a reason why you want to skip a class in the sequence? I am assuming you want to “skip” geometry?

Umm where i’m from you have to take a Credit By Exam before you can take the class above it. I think you have to do that as this is a math class and basically Alg. 2 is based off of Geometry and Algebra 1.

Your school has a student handbook that explains the requirements for promotion and graduation. Get a handbook which may be available online and it should tell you if geometry is a prerequisite for algebra II. It should also tell you if there are ways of getting around a prerequisite.

You and your parents need to get very familiar with the student handbook and work with your counselor to plan your schedule.

In a lot of cases, yes. Just go see your counselor and explain your situation. My school has been extremely accommodating, but I know a lot of CCers don’t have the same experience.

In my experience, yes.
And the letter grade will most likely go on your transcript, so you want to ace that test.

prerequisite for alg 2 is geometry, and the prequisite for geom. is alg. 1. alg 2 is not open to freshmen but open to sophomores. i think i prefer to take geom. for 8th grade and self study alg. 1’
how can they know if you already studied a certain course by self studying it? do you need to take a test?

Most of the time, yes.

I think you should take Algebra I in 8th grade. You can self study and get credit by exam for geometry or take geometry in the summer after 8th grade. You have to pay for summer school but credit by exam is free or almost free.

You should then be able to take algebra II in 9th grade. I don’t think your high school would prevent you from taking algebra II if you have passed the prerequisite.

thank JAMCAFE! i’ll take your advice… so, its either i’ll take algebra 1 for 7 th grade (if its available) then geom. for 8 th, or take alg. 1 for 8 th, self study or join the summer program(again, if available) for Geometry, and then by some miracle… i can finally take a course meant for sophomores! thanks, just gonna contact the school if these options were available:)

Wait, are you even in high school yet?

“take algebra 1 for 7th grade”

what the heck how old are you

are you like in 5th grade or something

going 7th…

lol
10 char

Oh my gosh. GET OFF OF CC WHILE YOU STILL CAN.

I ONLY CAME ON HERE AT THE END OF 10TH GRADE!

HaVE FUN WHILE YOU CAN AND STOP WORRYING ABOUT THIS STUFf.
