i’m a sophomore on a campus where you live in dorms all 4 years. i’m in accommodated housing in a double and was only recently assigned a roommate. however, she is not understanding of the reasons i need accommodations at all. she’s a nice person but it’s been impacting my mental health. i want to request a room change (or preferably a different roommate since im in a specially accommodated room) but i don’t know how to go about it. does anyone have tips?
Contact the Housing Department at your school.
I’m curious what they will do. It’s been my experience that the roommate who wants a different roommate is the one who gets switched to a new room.
If you have accomodations, I would check with your disabilities office..they probably can tell you who to speak with in housing (there may be a special person in housing, potentially). I am not sure how they will adjust - they very well may tell you to engage the RA to try to communicate this out (which I hope you have tried first since you said she is nice).
I’d start by talking to your roommate perhaps with the RA present. If that does not resolve the situation, you need to speak to the Office of Disabilites and possibly also the Office of Residential Life at your college. Nobody here knows the details so IMO it would be irresponsible to take a guess as to how things might play out. Good luck.
What specific reasons do you have for requesting a change?
