How to request more aid?

It’s possible that the “grants” amount is inclusive of Pell/SEOG … that is, the inclusion of federal awards after FAFSA is filed may not affect the amount of total grants. It’s important to find out. Please call and talk with a financial aid officer, who can help you understand everything. Just tell them that your portion owed is more than you had expected after doing the NPC. Tell them that Emory is your first choice, but that you need to understand your aid package and your actual costs. Because the cost appears to be higher than you thought it would be, you need to be sure you can afford it. Be honest when you talk to them.

Perhaps some schools aren’t breaking out the grant details right now as we wait on FAFSA?

ETA: I will also note for OP that some schools will not give consideration for out of pocket medical expenses, which appear could be part of the problem in OP’s case. Hopefully Emory’s FA staff can thoroughly answer OP’s questions.

Emory’s NPC displays Pell as a separate item in results, though it does not appear to use the new Pell formula (which is more generous).
Also Emory’s NPC (from collegeboard.org) appears to subtract medical costs (in excess of $2k) from assets, which are assessed at 5%. So $8k medical costs would just reduce Net Price by ($8k-$2k)*0.05=$300.
I don’t know what these things imply about the real results.
