How to request more aid?

I have recently received my financial aid package from Emory university. I would have to pay 7k more than what the NPC said (double). How can I go about asking for more financial aid, and how specifically? Should I just email my emory financial aid advisor asking for more aid and the reasons for such: NPC not matching and 8k in medical expenses?

You need to find out why your award was as it was. It’s very possible that what you put on the NPC didn’t align with your financial aid application forms. So…that needs to be clarified.

Were all those medical expenses not reimbursed by insurance, and for required care? Perhaps the college needs some clarity on that.

Was this for an ED acceptance?

My parents said they had to pay out of pocket for the medical expenses. And yes this was for an ED acceptance.

You need to contact your financial aid advisor at Emory and inquire about this. They should be able to help you.

Do you have a screen shot of your NPC data, and the resulting net price?

10 days ago, you were having difficulty uploading some info for Emory. Did that get done?

I do have a screen shot and link to my NPC. I did address that thing from ten days ago.

How should I phrase it to my financial aid advisor? Should I just start listing off my reasons for requesting more aid, or should I just ask them directly how to request more aid?

I think you need to ask how they calculated your aid since it is $7000 or so more net cost than the NPC predicted.

You can say that Emory is your top choice and the reason you chose ED was because of the net cost the NPC gave you.

See what the response is.

You need to ask why the NPC said $7k and it’s $14k.

There’s a reason. It could be the NPC is off or what you submitted is off.

Don’t forget each year you will be judged. So if your finances improve, your costs will go up.

You needn’t develop a plan to ask for more til you know you have a basis to.

So OP, your post seems to imply that the NPC said $7k, but Emory says Net Price is $14k, is that right?
With those numbers it would seem likely that you are Pell eligible, maybe SEOG too, and full Pell is over $7k. Moreover FAFSA forms aren’t even out yet, so these aren’t determined yet, though colleges may estimate them based on CSS numbers.
Perhaps the uncertainty around Federal Aid could explain the gap, especially since Pell is about $7k.
What are the details of your Finaid offer, specifically, what does it say about the Federal component of this aid.

I hope they clarify this!

This is what they wrote. Could be that the NPC said they would be paying $20,000 a year, and the actual award was $27,000 net cost.

OP said ā€œ$7k moreā€ and ā€œdoubleā€, so that would pin it down exactly, but OP should clarify.

My FA award was roughly 72k and the cost of attendance is 86k. The NPC said that I would have to pay approximately 7k.

Thank you for the clarification. So…you would be paying $14,000 to attend Emory, right? Does this include personal expenses and travel, and health insurance? Those costs are a bit in your control.

Ask about the difference between the NPC net cost and your award net cost. This is the best way to approach this. See what they say.

What exactly does the FA award say about Pell and SEOG?

And is the $5500 Direct Loan included in your package?

It does not mention anything about Pell grants or SEOG.

Well…when you call…you should ask if they think you are eligible for the Pell anyway. That would cover the difference. And if you are eligible for the Pell grant, that is an entitlement grant.Did your net price calculator result delineate federally funded grant money?

I’ll add, however, that some colleges reduce their institutional grant money in the amount of the Pell when they include the Pell. I don’t know Emory’s policy on this. @Mwfan1921 do you have any thoughts here?

There is no loans included in my package; it’s made up of only grants (ā€˜Emory advantage grant’ and ā€˜estimated grant’) and one work study.

What is the amount of the estimated grant?

Estimated grant 66.5k; 3.5k from the Emory advantage grant; 2.5k from work study

Is that from the NPC or your award letter?

If on the award letter, I’d ask how certain this ā€œestimated grantā€ actually IS.

So…on your award…no mention of the Pell or Direct Loans?

I’ll add…don’t get down about this. It’s likely it will all get resolved one way or another.
