How to stop catastrophizing

My D was upset with us that we didn’t DO anything when we get the incorrect text alert of an incoming missle earlier this year. H and I live in a one story wooden house with no basement, no rock, no concrete. There is no shelter to speak of that of any substance within miles of our home. It made no sense to us to DO anything other than go about our daily lives.

I guess we are mostly fairly pragmatic rather than catasrophizers.

@greenbutton, cognitive behavioral therapy is all about this. And the course of treatment can be very quick.

I have a friend at work who believes that all roads lead to her living in a cardboard box. Zero to sixty in a blink of an eye. Tough meeting with team or client issue. Right to the street.

Imo, CBT works best for those who’ve never previously considered their thinking patterns. The lightbulb can go on. It’s just one of many styles.

Someone facing a true crisis or a string of them might change their thinking. But the real life problems can remain.

My D went through a course of CBT (not sure if that’s the right way to word it) and found that it reinforced some things she was already doing. She did find it helpful.

@lookingforward, it sounds like CBT didn’t work out for you. Have you found something else to be more helpful? I’m on the look out for ways to help my D.
