Hi guys, I was wondering if there is a way of telling financial aid that you won some scholarships and asking them not to give you less because you have scholarship money?
Sure, send them an email, make a phone call, or send an old fashioned letter. You could even visit in person to deliver the message. That’s how you tell them something. But, none of it will likely work, because most schools have a policy of reducing need-based aid by the amount of outside scholarships. If you’re lucky, work study and loans will be reduced first (if those have been awarded) before grants and scholarships are reduced.
Keep in mind, too, Seatown, that the college itself may be powerless to do much of anything about your need based aid in some situations. In my state, the state grant cannot be awarded if need has been met, so institutional merit + outside scholarship meet need or some percentage of it, the college has no choice but to reduce or eliminate the state grant.
Colleges will not award you need based aid that exceeds your calculated need…adding together all sources of your scholarship awards.
