How to Switch from Non-Thesis to Thesis Track?

Hi everyone! My name is Kyle and I will be attending graduate school in the fall for my Master’s in Civil Engineering (Non-Thesis option).

I had a couple of questions. I applied to my university’s thesis track, but was only accepted under the non-thesis option. I am looking to apply for Ph.D school after I finish my Master’s at there, so how vital is it that I earn a Master’s degree with a thesis?

My most important question however, is how possible is it to switch from being a Non-Thesis student to being a Thesis student once you are at a university? I love the school that I will be attending, but I also want to be able to pursue my Ph.D afterwards. I feel kind of stuck and any guidance that you would be able to share would be VERY appreciated!

Every program has its own rules for changing from non-Thesis to Thesis. Some may not allow it at all. You really have to ask the program director this question. As for moving ito a Ph.D. program after your Masters, it is not absolutley necessary to do a Thesis but you do want to get some research expereince even if it is just as a volunteer at no pay.
