Hello, I just have a few questions about the AMC 10/12 exams. Sorry this is a lot of questions. Also, not sure if this is the correct thread to be posting this in… Let me know if I’ll get more responses elsewhere. Thank you in advanced for reading/answering!
How does a student take the AMC 10/12? Does the school have to order/administer the exams? Can a student take them individually somewhere without the school’s sponsorship? What does it take to score highly on the exams? How do people study for the exams? What concepts are covered in the exams? What are the benefits of taking the exams? What is the difference between AMC 10 and AMC 12?
Thank you so much!!
My school orders the exam for us. Ask your school counselor/ math department sponsor, they should have infos about it.
The exam is very difficult, and the best way to study it is to take multiple practice exams. (Taking past exams can let you get familiar with the problem formats/patterns, so you can save time on real exam. However, it’s not a test that you can study and “pass”. It requires a highly understanding of math to do well.)
AMC 10 and 12 both only requires pre-calculus, but calculus would be helpful. Actual questions are very twisted, and much harder than most in-class tests (and I would say it’s also much harder than the AP Calculus BC exam…)
Another difference is AMC 10 gives you pictures/ graphs, and AMC 12 only give you words (and you need to draw pictures from it…)
If you qualified to the next level, AIME, it shows college that you are very good at math… If you pass AIME, it will boost your resume a lot and probably will help you get to Ivy league schools…
Good luck!
@Shanban1607 scroll through AoPS and their forums, they contain quite a bit of information on the AMC, AIME, USAMO exams and how to prepare for them. You can also see past tests as well as mock tests created by some AoPS users.
@duravative Thank you so much for that, it answered a bunch of questions I had!
@MITer94 I will be sure to do that, thank you
