Quick question…

My house was built 70 years ago. I have a garage as well… Not sure if that was original or came later.

About five to ten years ago the owners renovated the whole house. New kitchen, bathroom, windows roof, siding, doors, etc.

The only thing that is still noticeably old, aside from my basement windows, is the old wooden entry door on my garage. It’s wooden and the exterior paint is chipping off it.

I want to sand and repaint but someone Said it might be lead paint and not to do that.

Can I take a chipped piece to home depot and them do a test? Is it easier just to replace the door? This one swells when it is rainy and humid and it’s very hard to open.

You can buy a lead tester kit from Home Depot or any other hardware store. I believe you take a small chip of paint and put in an included solution. They have known reliability issues, so I might do a bit of research to see which gives the fewest false positives.

The thing to remember about lead paint and asbestos is they’re only really dangerous when they’re free in the air. Even if it says there’s no lead in the paint I’d keep my sandpaper fairly wet to prevent dusting while cleaning it off.

If the door is going lousy you might want to just look at how much HD/Lowes/local place would be to install a new steel or fiberglass door. My old wooden one sticks worse on certain days, and I can’t even say how nice it was after I did a little work to level it out and the door closes easily ~50% of the time now.
